Carly Rae Jepsen's sound is unmistakably pop. But her look — these days, at least — has a bit of a rock 'n' roll edge. Case in point: her sexy style at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 19.
Showing off her recently dyed auburn locks, the "Call Me Maybe" singer, 27, hit the blue carpet in a daring black Dyanthe dress with sheer, strategically placed cutouts. But the foxy frock was just part of her makeover; she also got some help from celebrity makeup artist/hairstylist Andrea Tiller, who gave Us Weekly all the details on how the pop star's look came together.
"I really wanted the makeup to make a statement," Tiller tells Us, noting that she kept Jepsen's hair simple for that very reason. "I wanted to bring out the edgier and sexier side of Carly, so I chose to do a beautiful smoky eye."
She did this not with the usual grays and blacks but with a palette of "rich cranberry and plum colors," which she says are the "perfect colors to bring out [Carly's] piercing blue eyes." The biggest inspiration for the look, Jepsen's longtime makeup artist tells Us, was the singer's "amazing" new hair color. Well, that and rock 'n' roll's sexy style.
"I really love the punk/grunge trend and wanted to incorporate a touch of that in this look, but in a glam, sexy, cool way that would be appropriate for the red carpet," Tiller explains. "We're taking more risks with her style. I like to think it's sexier, current, more mature, and true to who she really is on and off the stage…We don't like to always do the same thing. We are always experimenting and looking for new things to try."
Tiller adds that Jepsen is very trusting and open to ideas. "I have been working with her for so long and mostly on an everyday basis, so…I know her essence and what she likes and doesn't like," she explains. "Cool and sexy is the vibe we are always going for."
