Barbara Walters addresses retirement rumors.

Barbara Walters isn't retiring . . . at least not today! The View returned Monday, April 1, after a two-week break, and the veteran TV news personality used the opportunity to address rumors that surfaced last week claiming she's ending her more than 50-year career.

"There were many reports last week that I was retiring from ABC and there was an assumption that I would be making an announcement today. The paparazzi were outside my home today . . . however, here I am, and I have no announcement to make," Walters, 83, said on the show to the applause of the audience.

But she added, "I do want to say this: that if and when I might have an announcement to make, I will do it on this program, I promise, and the paparazzi guys —- you will be the last to know."

The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline initially reported on March 28 that the veteran journalist is set to retire in May 2014. According to both outlets, Walters does plan, however, to continue co-hosting The View for one more year as the show transitions Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck out.
