Best Throwback Thursday picture ever? On May 23, TIME released two shots of President Obama on the night of his senior prom in 1979. Former classmate Kelli Allman (nee McCormack), also pictured in the photos, shared them with the magazine.

In the classic prom picture, a grinning 17-year-old Obama poses with (from left to right) Greg Orme, a fellow varsity basketball player at Punahou School in Hawaii and "his constant companion," says the magazine; Orme's date Allman; and Obama's date Megan Hughes, a student at the Hawaii School for Girls at La Pietra. The teenagers are clad in leis and their 1970s best.
"It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up, and everyone was smiling," Allman told TIME. "It was pretty typical from there out as far as what happens at prom: the dinner and the dancing and the photos."
Allman also shared Obama's funny and flirty yearbook note to her that year. "You are extremely sweet and foxy, I don't know why Greg would want to spend any time with me at all! You really deserve better than clowns like us; you even laugh at my jokes!" the future POTUS wrote.
