Fashion Star has gone out of fashion. The reality series — featuring mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos — has been canceled after two seasons, NBC entertainment president Bob Greenblatt confirmed during the summer TCA press tour on Saturday, July 27. The show — which documented a group of fashion designers competing to have their garments sold in Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Express stores — drew just 2.5 million viewers during its May 10 finale.
The low-rated program got a major makeover in its second season, beginning with moving the show from Tuesday to Friday nights. Express took over for H&M on the buyers' panel. Louise Roe, meanwhile, replaced original host Elle Macpherson, who retained her role as executive producer. Simpson, Richie and Varvatos were also assigned teams of designers, making their involvement more hands-on.
Head of her own successful brand, Simpson recently unveiled her Fall 2013 fashion campaign, and Richie — who designs both clothing and jewelry — currently stars in the AOL reality series #CandidlyNicole.
Fashion Star's executive producers, E.J. Johnston and James Deutch, are currently developing another fashion-based reality show with Mad Men's costume designer, Janie Bryant.
