Rock on. The former White Stripes rocker Jack White has given back to the Detroit Masonic Temple in Detroit, Mich., donating $142,000 in back taxes to stop the music venue from going into foreclosure.
According to the Detroit Free Press, White, a Detroit native, had close ties to the theater — his mother was once an usher there and he himself has played nine concerts at the theater over the years (seven with the White Stripes, two solo).
While the 37-year-old singer-songwriter has not spoken about his donation, the theater couldn't be more thankful for his good deed.
"Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time, and we are eternally grateful to him for it," Roger Sobran, the president of the Detroit Masonic Temple Association, told the newspaper. "Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words."
One of the two theaters inside the 14-story building will be renamed the Jack White Theater, the paper reports.
Besides White, The Who, The Rolling Stones and many other musical acts have performed at the venue, which first opened in February 1926.
White was the vocalist, guitarist and pianist of The White Stripes until they split in February 2011, and has also played with The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. He released his solo album in April 2012.
