Nicole Richie wasn't the only one rocking a bold new hair color at the Costume Institute Gala in New York City May 6. Anne Hathaway, who's been keeping a low profile since winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in March, made her red carpet return to celebrate the opening of the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition.

The former brunette debuted her newly dyed blonde hair at the star-studded event. "I don't know that you could tell it by looking at me, but Debbie Harry was [my inspiration]," Hathaway told Vogue.com. Adam Shulman's wife wore a vintage Valentino gown from 1992.

"I couldn't believe it when he sent me the picture because he asked me if I wanted to wear archive . . He said, 'Well, have you ever done anything punk, darling?'" Hathaway laughed. "Princess, maybe! He sent me this one and I said, 'Oh my god, I love it. It's fabulous! First and only [choice] as soon as I saw it!"

Hathaway added, "I took the chaos thing as far as the couture would allow."

Ironically, the 30-year-old Les Miserables actress was supposed to wear a custom Valentino look to the Oscars earlier this year, but she swapped it at the last-minute when she learned her costar Amanda Seyfried was planning to wear a similar-looking Alexander McQueen gown. (A source told Us Weekly Hathaway "started throwing a fit" after Seyfried showed her an iPhone snapshot of the dress.)

Hathaway acknowledged the dress drama by releasing a statement via her publicist. "Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself," she said of the designer, who created her custom wedding dress in the fall of 2012. "I deeply regret any disappointment caused."
