AnnaSophia Robb, who plays the iconic "Sex and the City" character Carrie Bradshaw in the CW's upcoming "The Carrie Diaries," didn't land the role by strutting around in Manolos as the Manhattanite often did, but by performing a move that's not very Carrie-like at all.
"They told me that I got the part because I did a little chicken dance at the end of my audition, after they asked me about my prom," the 19-year-old tells Teen Vogue. "I've got rhythm, but not the moves to go with it, and I guess they liked that I wasn't afraid to be goofy."
Robb's portrayal of Bradshaw experiencing New York City as a teen in 1984 begins airing January 14. But it's something that she never expected, since she had already been accepted to Stanford University, and because it's for the small screen.
"When I was younger, I didn't want to be on TV,” Robb explains. “I made a conscious decision to stay away from Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel – not that they're not great companies, but because I wanted to play different kinds of roles and have the freedom to choose my projects. So when my agent called about this job, I said no way. TV was too much of a commitment."
She changed her mind after reading the script. "I realized it was actually a really strong story," Robb says. "It had a lot of heart and integrity, and Carrie seems like a character that I can grow with."
The starlet and her character already have a couple of things in common. For example, they both like to complain about men. Robb, who's currently single, says her biggest issue with the opposite sex is that they won't hit on her.
"Never," she insists. "Everyone always says that guys are intimidated by me, but I seriously doubt it. I mean, I'm five-foot-nothing! I think I must make a stank face,” she says, pulling her features into a scowl.
And like Carrie, Robb has also fallen hard for the Big Apple, where she relocated to from outside of Denver to film "The Carrie Diaries." "I think I was made to live in New York," she gushes. "I love it!"
