Talk about cross-over appeal. Singer-songwriter James Blunt memorializes gone-too-soon R&B diva Whitney Houston with his new song “Miss America.” In the somber, touching single, the 39-year-old musician mourns her untimely death.
The first lines of his new song make it clear that his latest track is about the troubled singer. “Did someone give you something to ease the pain, like the liquor in a bottle we watched you slip away,” he belts in the opening lyrics. Houston was found dead at the age of 48 in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11, 2012. The cause of death was “drowning due to atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”
“And I feel as if I knew you, through the bars of a song, always surrounded but alone,” he continues in the song, which is the first release from his upcoming new album, Moon Landing. In the stripped-down music video for “Miss America,” the “You’re Beautiful” singer looks reflective as he croons while playing the piano.
“But no good-byes, you’ll always be Miss America. We watched you fly, but nothing’s free Miss America,” he sings wistfully in the chorus.
