Cheyenne Jackson Calls Divorce a “Sad Thing,” Reveals He’s in AA

Cheyenne Jackson says his divorce from Monte Lapka is a "sad thing" and confirms that rumors he's in AA are true.

Cheyenne Jackson is in a good and bad place in his life right now. In an interview with The Frank DeCaro Show on SiriusXM OutQ on Thursday, Aug. 1, the actor opened up about his divorce from Monte Lapka and addressed rumors that he is in AA.

Jackson, 38, confirmed he and husband Lapka, a physicist, were calling it quits after two years of marriage. "Yeah, it is a sad thing," he said on the radio show. "It's a sad thing anytime a relationship ends. We had a good long run, almost 13 years. Like [the statement] we released yesterday, it was mutual and it was amicable. He is a wonderful man. It's a sad personal thing."

On Aug. 1, the Glee actor released a statement to Us Weekly through his rep, saying, "Cheyenne Jackson and his husband Monte Lapka have mutually decided to divorce. The couple have been together for 13 years and were married in NY State two years ago. It is an amicable parting and, understandably, a private matter."

Jackson observed that giving a public statement regarding his divorce felt like a weird thing to do. "Sometimes, I guess, I'm a little naive to think that people will even care, but they do. So, you have to understand the significance that your relationship had to other people," he explained. "I know that our marriage meant a lot to other people. That's not lost on me, and I respect that."

During the show, the Broadway star also addressed rumors that he is in Alcoholics Anonymous. "That happens to be true," he admitted. "I started my recovery last summer and it became something I really wanted to focus on in my life and repairing relationships in my family and such. So, this is a really, strong, beautiful time for me, personally. It also is a very sad time because I am going through a divorce."

Though he said it is "pretty f—ed up" to have that rumor started, Jackson added, "But you know what, I own it. I'm proud of myself. My life is great  . . . It's sad right now because we're both going through something that's really painful, but that's life."
