Love at first swipe? Conan O’Brien has been happily married (to a lady, with kids) for more than a decade, but he’s nevertheless fascinated by the world of dating apps. Last year he signed up for Tinder with Dave Franco, and this year he decided to venture onto its gay forerunner, Grindr. As he did before, he enlisted a celebrity pal to be his tour guide — in this case, comedian Billy Eichner.
After a quick review of the app — “Grindr is for basically gay guys not pretending it’s for anything other than meeting up to have sex,” Eichner says — the two get down to the business of creating a profile for O’Brien. They tick through a couple of possible names, including “Rich Ginger” and “Ginger Sugar Daddy,” before settling on Eichner’s suggestion, “Frecklef–ker.” Natch.
With that and O’Brien’s whimsical profile photo done, they start browsing the selection of available men, occasionally stopping to draft messages to the ones they deem appealing. (Sample text, complete with an obscure American Idol reference: “You look like Sanjaya. Am I your Melinda Dolittle?”)
Ultimately, they arrange a meeting with a guy Eichner says “looks like the brother from Fresh Prince.” Equipped with a bowl full of condoms, they set out in a party van painted with the likenesses of Cher and Liza Minnelli. Destination? The parking lot of a local Vons.
“You know, I hate this,” O’Brien jokes. “I’m already planning my life with him.”
