Too many great performances, too few awards! The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored some of the best and brightest in TV and film when they announced the 2014 Golden Globe nominations on Thursday, Dec. 12.
Many of the nominees — like Sandra Bullock in Gravity, or Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave — were no-brainers. Others — like Masters of Sex, and Andy Samberg in Brooklyn Nine-Nine — were pleasant surprises. But the biggest shock of all was the list of actors, actresses, shows, and movies who were left off the list completely.
On the movie side, Lee Daniels' The Butler was completely shut out of the race, despite mostly positive reviews from critics and early awards season buzz for stars Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. (Both received Screen Actors Guild Award nominations on Wednesday.)
The acclaimed Fruitvale Station was also passed over. Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer earned raves for their performances in the film, but neither got any love from the HFPA. Similarly, the late James Gandolfini was nominated posthumously for a SAG Award but not for a Golden Globe. (He costarred with Julia-Louis Dreyfus in Enough Said.)
Several directors were snubbed, as well. The Wolf of Wall Street filmmaker Martin Scorsese, for example, failed to score a Best Director nomination even though his movie is up for Best Picture in the drama category. Same with Spike Jonze and Joel and Ethan Coen, whose films Her and Inside Llewyn Davis both earned nominations.
On the television side, Showtime favorite Homeland was noticeably absent from the list. Series stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home trophies at last year's Golden Globes, but neither is even nominated at this year's ceremony.
Netflix newcomer Orange Is the New Black was snubbed, too, save for one Best Actress nomination for leading lady Taylor Schilling. (Netflix's other hit, House of Cards, fared much better, with nominations for both the show and stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and Corey Stoll.)
Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones were also pushed aside, as was most of the cast of Modern Family. (Sofia Vergara managed to score a Best Supporting Actress nod, but the rest of the ensemble was left out.)
