Chloe Moretz Goes Goth, Looks Unrecognizable in Dark Wig and Makeup: Picture

Chloe Moretz looks nearly unrecognizable on the cover of Dazed and Confused magazine's "dark arts" issue.

Chloe Moretz definitely knows how to get into character. The 16-year-old star of the upcoming Carrie remake transformed her look for the “dark arts” issue of Dazed & Confused magazine, looking worlds away from her usual bubbly, blonde self.

On the cover, the up-and-coming teen dons a short, Joan Jett-esque black wig and offsets her startlingly edgy new look with thick eyeliner and a steely gaze. The actress also switches up her style in a tweed-and-silk Chanel jacket and a Meadham Kirchhoff ruffled shirt.

But maybe it’s just a sign of growing up? During a previous interview with Glamour, the young actress revealed that she’s been “wearing a lot of all black” recently.

“I really love Winona Ryder — her look in the time right after Mermaids and Heathers, that first year of Johnny Depp and her,” she told the magazine. “They were the best couple ever — they’re like Romeo and Juliet!”

Chloe Moretz talked to reporters about being nervous in the lead-up to the iconic prom scene in Carrie.

In a recent roundtable for Carrie, Moretz told reporters that she had to reach deep to find the right emotions to tap into to play her dark character of the bullied telekinetic teen with an intense Bible-thumping mom (played by Julianne Moore). The original 1976 version of the film starred Sissy Spacek as the titular teen and Piper Laurie as her mother.

“Everyone has something inside them that, if they want to bring it up every day, they could cry about it, they could be sad and live their life in just complete terror of your own feelings,” she explained. “And that was really what I had to bring up was all my vulnerabilities. All my vulnerabilities that I, even at fifteen, had learned to deal with and to put away and go, ok this is how you’re human and this is how you live everyday life without crying and stuff.”

The iconic prom scene, in particular — in which Carrie has a bucket full of pig’s blood dumped on her after she is crowned prom queen as a cruel joke — was particularly nerve-wracking to film, she said.

“It kind of felt like when you were about to drop off of one of those droppy rides, which is always scary because you know something is going to happen,” she said. “And I’m like, this is so crazy right now. And [I grabbed] Ansel Elgort‘s hand (the actor plays jock Tommy Ross)… that wasn’t supposed to happen. We grabbed each other’s hands because we were both so scared.”
