Michael Fassbender: I’m “Kind of Selfish” With Women, Longest Relationship Was Two Years

Michael Fassbender tells GQ he's selfish with women

The allure of Michael Fassbender–his quiet brooding nature combined with his chiseled features and chops as a hard-hitting actor who refuses to be typecast–has propelled the star to Hollywood’s A-list in the last two years. Alas, his dating life has suffered a bit, the Irish-German actor admits in the November issue of GQ.

While Fassbender’s twisted roles in film, as a sex addict in Shame, young Magneto in X Men and as a ruthlessslave driver in the upcoming film, 12 Years a Slave, have garnered a significant amount of attention, the hunk's dating life still remains somewhat shrouded by mystery.

"I'm kind of selfish with the hours that I put into the work," he shares as the conversation traces how his steady stream of roles has impacted his relationships with family, friends and women.

Fassbender, who dated his considerably younger X-Men: First Class costar Zoe Kravitz from 2010 to 2011, and Shame costar Nicole Beharie for seven months up until earlier this year, was most recently linked to British Olympian Louise Hazel in May.

"I think the longest relationship that I’ve been in was two years," he continues. "I started doing this when I was 17, so I guess in my dating, adult life, that kind of covers it."

The actor acknowledges that his recent fame has affected his dating life. "You become a lot more successful in terms of, like, talking to a girl. She's all of a sudden more interested in me. I know that, like, three years ago, she would’ve walked away after two sentences left my mouth.”

He shares this real-life story: "I remember I was sitting at this table at this thing, and I was talking to this girl. I was like, 'God, I am so boring right now.' But she was like, 'That's so interesting!' I was like, 'You know what? Five years ago, this would not have been interesting.'"

Fassbender, however, remains focused and grounded, citing his early struggles in his career. The handsome star held a range of jobs in his career, working as a barman, unloading boxes off trucks and even following up on complaints for the UK’s postal service, the Royal Mail.

The November issue of GQ hits stands October 22.
