While audiences fervently, obsessively await the release of the film adaptation of kinky novel Fifty Shades of Grey this Valentine’s Day weekend, director Sam Taylor-Johnson revealed to HuffPost Live that Dakota Johnson even got her naughty bits into character for her turn as the submissive Anastasia Steele.
Taylor-Johnson, 47, said everything about the Anastasia’s appearance was a “conscious choice” — including her approach to personal grooming.
“Dakota and I had a very funny discussion about the arc and journey of her pubic hair, that she should start one way, and she goes on this journey with it, and in line with how it’s written in the book is the journey of that,” laughed Taylor-Johnson. “Look out for the journey of the pubic hair.”
The director said Johnson’s transformation into timid Anastasia went beyond just outward appearance, however.
“She really embodied Anastasia Steele, from the moment I met her I thought ‘Yea, I think this is the girl,’” said Taylor-Johnson. “Because she has a sweetness and a vulnerability but she’s strong and she’s a strong woman as a person, and all of that we needed for the arc of Anastasia and for her journey, so that we feel that as she goes through it she becomes more and more empowered.”
