Stop everything. The 1987 film classic Adventures in Babysitting is coming back. Disney announced on Friday, Jan. 9, that it’s remaking the Chris Columbus-directed action comedy into a TV movie — well, sort of.
Girl Meets World star Sabrina Carpenter and Austin & Ally’s Sofia Carson are set to star in the project, which will be loosely based on the flick. Further Adventures in Babysitting will center on two competitive babysitters, Jenny (Carpenter) and Luci (Carson), who find themselves searching New York City to find one of their charges.
The company also announced it will be releasing a Disney Channel movie titled Invisible Star, starring Girl Meets World’s Rowan Blanchard (Riley Matthews) and actress Paris Berelc. Both are scheduled to premiere in fall 2015 and early 2016.
“We know these four young actresses all have the potential for extraordinary careers, and we’re excited to give them new opportunities to showcase their talents,” Adam Bonnett, Disney’s Executive Vice President, said in a statement on Friday. “These new movies bring our viewers comedic and heartfelt stories that the entire family can enjoy together, and I’m particularly thrilled to introduce a new take on a personal favorite, Adventures in Babysitting, to a whole new generation.”
Adventures in Babysitting starred Back to the Future’s Elisabeth Shue as Chris, a babysitter whose relaxing after-school job turns into a hellish nightmare when her friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) calls in a panic. Chris brings along kids Brad (Keith Coogan) and Sara (Maia Brewton) to rescue her, but ultimately finds herself running away from thugs and singing karaoke in a jazz Chicago club. Brad’s pesky pal Daryl (famed Rent actor Anthony Rapp) also tags along.
