Written by Oscar winner Eric Roth (Ali, Forrest Gump), Africa is a biopic of Richard Leakey, the renowned archaeologist and Kenyan politician who became the first chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service in 1990, and helped crack down on elephant poaching. In 2013, the American Humanist Association awarded him the Isaac Asimov Science Award.

(Roth also wrote the screenplay for Pitt's 2008 drama The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.)

This will be Jolie's fifth time in the director's chair. She's previously sat behind the camera for her 2007 documentary A Place in Time, In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011), her most recent drama Unbroken, and the upcoming film By the Sea, in which Pitt, 51, also stars. The Wrap reports that Jolie will reunite with her Unbroken cinematographer Roger Deakins for Africa.

"I've felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life," Jolie, 39, said in a statement back in September, via Yahoo News. "[The film's about] a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers, who emerged with a deeper understanding of man's footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him."
