Kevin Federline was thrown into the spotlight in 2004 when he first started dating Britney Spears, a time, he recalls, no one could’ve prepared him for. During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the now dad of six, 37, reflects on his marriage and divorce to one of the world’s biggest superstars, 33.
“That time of my life, it was great,” the former backup dancer told Us. “It was fun, it was crazy, it was chaos…The limelight, the entertainment business, the lifestyle — period. When you’re 25-years-old, how do you handle that? Nobody can prepare you.”
Federline, who is now launching a career as a DJ and is happily married to wife Victoria Prince, admits he never “really got used to” the lifestyle and fame that came with dating Spears — but it wasn’t about that for him.
“That’s what really got my attention,” he recalled of Spears’ Southern charm and “normal life values.” “It got my attention — the loving, caring person behind it all.”
Although their relationship ultimately took a turn and ended in divorce in 2006, the dad to Spears’ sons Preston and Jayden says at the end of the day, he’ll always care for the “Oops I Did It Again” songstress.
“There was ups and downs. We’re not perfect people, obviously,” he told Us. “There’s things that she did, there’s things that I did…I think all of that is just from being young and everything plays a part into it…[but] I have so many great memories, they outweigh the bad,” Federline recalled. “For us to split up and me say that, it should speak very loudly.”
Federline, who went on to marry Prince in 2013, also credits Spears for helping him find love again.
“Things that [Britney] brought out in me were, a better sense on having a great relationship with somebody,” he continued. “I really learned a lot about what I like in a person from her, a lot.”
“Vic is my best friend,” Federline gushed of his wife, with whom he shares kids Jordan, 3, and Peyton, 14 months. “We work well together. We both want the same things for our children. Me and Vic know how to have fun together and I think that’s important.”
