No desire to follow in mom or dad’s footsteps! John Travolta‘s son Ben made his reluctant television debut on Monday, April 20.

The cute tot, 4, made a brief appearance on the Late Show on Monday, April 20, alongside his mother Kelly Preston. Travolta, 61, was catching up with host David Letterman in promotion of his new movie The Forger, when he referenced his son, who was hiding out backstage.

The Pulp Fiction star told a story about a new truck he bought, and a recent time when he and Ben took a ride in the car to Toys “R” Us. Travolta was stopped by fans clamoring for his autograph, and wasn’t sure if his young son understood his level of celebrity.

“I said, ‘Why are all these people wanting my photograph?'” Travolta explained. “I didn’t know if he knew I was in films or not. He said, ‘Well, maybe they saw one of your movies!'”

“Then he said, ‘I wanna work with you,'” Travolta continued of his son. “And so tonight, later, maybe, he could come on and say hi to you if it’s okay… If you allow him to.” Ben is the youngest of the Travolta-Preston children, following older sister Ella, 15, and the late Jett, who tragically died at the age of 16 in 2009. Ben was conceived after Jett’s death, and was called a “miracle” by the couple, especially considering Preston’s age.

Letterman, 68, was thrilled by the prospect of meeting Ben and exclaimed, “Bring him out now! Where’s the kid? Bring the kid out!”

The cameras then panned to the backstage area at Letterman’s New York City studios, where Preston, 52, could be seen carrying young Ben on her hip. The adorable little boy grinned as he embraced his mother, making his way over to the stage entrance.

Ben trepidatiously came onto the stage, but clearly did not want to let go of his mother. When the Jerry Maguire actress tried to put her son down, he immediately ran offstage. Watch Letterman meet Ben in the video above!
