It's on! Things got awkward on American Idol during Top 7 week when judge Harry Connick, Jr. took issue with something singer Quentin Alexander told Ryan Seacrest after his first performance of the night.

"This sucks," the 21-year-old told the Idol host after the judges commented on his performance of Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way." "We've got two of the best vocalists, my best friend, sitting over there. This whole thing is wack, but I'm going to shut up right now."

Connick, Jr., 47, wasn't happy with his perceived criticism of the show, shooting back, "Quentin, if it's that wack, then you can always go home, because Idol is paying a lot of money to give you this experience and for you to say that to this hand that is feeding you right now, I think is highly disrespectful."

But Alexander insisted he wasn't trying to insult the show that brought him into the public eye, just the fact that two of his friends — Joey Cook and Rayvon Owen — were in danger of going home.

"For my personal feelings, it sucks to see two people who I've grown to love go home," answered Alexander. "That's what I mean is wack. I'm not disrespecting this competition."

Ultimately, Alexander's BFF, Cook, was sent home. Backstage after the show, however, he seemed to have brushed off the whole kerfuffle with the Hope Floats star.

"Quentin was in really good spirits after the show," an Idol insider revealed to Us Weekly. "As he conveyed on stage, he’s extremely emotional, especially about his fellow contestants who are practically family at this stage."

The source added that Alexander's fellow singers felt the same way about the brouhaha. "The other contestants have been echoing those same sentiments," the source said.

But while the beef seems to have been settled, the question still remains — which man was in the right? Did Connick, Jr. misunderstand Alexander's comments, or was Alexander talking out of turn and criticizing a contest in which he is still very much participating?
