Leave it to Dave Grohl to make light of now having six screws in his leg. The Foo Fighters frontman released an open letter to fans on Tuesday, June 16, via the band’s website, humorously recalling how he broke his leg on stage last week and apologizing for canceling the European leg of their tour.

“The funniest thing happened to me the other day in Sweden!” the rocker wrote before going into semi-graphic detail about how he fell 12 feet mid-concert on June 12. Grohl revealed he ended up dislocating his ankle and snapping his fibula “like an old pair of takeout chopsticks.” Believe it or not, he then “stood up to get back onstage and crumbled like a sack.”

“I couldn’t stand the thought of such a perfect night going to waste…So, as the band kicked in to ‘Stay With Me’ by The Faces, the medics poured me onto a stretcher, took me off to the side, cut my favorite pants off (so bummed) and popped my ankle back into place,” Grohl continued before explaining that he then had a cast delivered to him because he didn’t want to cut the show short. “All in all, it was without a doubt the single most bizarre Foo Fighters show in the entire 20 years of being a band. Hands down.”

Grohl actually finished the entire show before finally going to the hospital, where he was informed he would need surgery. After flying to London to get treated — the “operation went well” and he had “good curry, too!” — he’s left “recovering with six metals screws” in his leg.

“So…here I am…thinking about a lifetime of holding up TSA lines from here to Kalamazoo…damn,” he joked, and then apologized because “doctors have told us to cancel shows.”

“I’m really so sorry, guys. You know I hate to do it, but I’m afraid it’s just not physically possible for me at the moment…I will do everything I can to come back and give you a night to remember for the rest of your lives AS SOON AS POSSIBLE,” he swore. And then, came his kicker: “PS……Kanye…Imma let you have this one…”
