Jimmy Fallon Explains Stomach-Turning Finger Injury, Near Amputation

Ouch! Jimmy Fallon returned to the Tonight Show desk on Monday, July 13, and gave his New York City studio audience all of the gruesome details on his headline-making hand injury.

As Us Weekly previously reported, the comedian, 40, was hospitalized last month, and Fallon finally made his grand return to his late-night show with a glaring new accessory in the form of a bulbous hand cast wrapped around his ring finger.

“What a crazy break we had — a two week break,” Fallon began. “So basically what happened is, I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves and I can’t wait to burn it to the ground. I tripped and fell and I caught my fall… I’m getting up and my finger is sideways.”

“So I go, ‘Oh my god, did I just break my finger?'” the Saturday Night Live alum continued. “This is the lamest thing in the whole wide world. It completely looks fake. It looks like a cheap horror movie where you see a broken finger.”

Fallon went on to explain that he got in a cab to the emergency room at one hospital before being told he needed to go to another hospital to see a specialist, as his finger was not broken, but rather injured by ring avulsion. “Basically what it is is that my ring got caught on the countertop when I was going down and stuck there and pulled my finger off,” the star explained.

The Tonight Show host then found himself at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital being treated by an “amazing” doctor wearing a bow tie and cowboy boots. The “awesome” doctor performed microsurgery on Fallon, which involved removing a vein from his foot in order to save his finger.

“Apparently the odds aren’t great with these things,” Fallon said. “This happens a lot and the odds are not — usually they’re just gonna cut your finger off.”
