It apparently is a laughing matter! Johnny Depp joked on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, Sept. 10, about the legal troubles he and his wife, Amber Heard, found themselves in earlier this year when they brought their dogs Boo and Pistol to Australia while he was filming Pirates of the Caribbean.
“We were under the impression that we had all the paperwork done for the dogs,” the actor, 52, told the late-night host of the situation. Australia’s prime minister of agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, had accused the movie star in May of smuggling the dogs into the country and threatened to euthanize them if they weren’t sent back to the U.S. promptly.
Though Depp insists he didn’t sneak his beloved pooches into the country, “There may have been other things smuggled!” he joked. “They really seemed to miss that bit!”
The Black Mass star may be able to poke fun at the situation now, but he’s still a bit miffed with the official. “You know, maybe he’s just doing his job, this sort of weird, sweaty … gut man who decided two 5-, 6-inch teacup Yorkshire terriers would harm the country in some way. He’s got a point!” Depp cracked.
But as Kimmel, 47, pointed out, the star couple aren’t off the hook yet. In fact, Heard, 29, is facing two counts of illegally importing their dogs into Australia. “They threatened to put her in jail!” the late-night host exclaimed.
“If they did that, I’d fly to Australia and assault that man!” Depp laughed.
His actress wife may not be as willing to let things go, though. “I have a feeling we’re going to be avoiding the land Down Under from now on, just as much as we can, thanks to certain politicians there,” she told Australia’s Sunrise morning show in late June.
