Andie MacDowell: Magic Mike Is a Fun Movie – Stop Taking It Seriously!

Some movie fans may beg to differ, but Joe Manganiello, Channing Tatum, and Matt Bomer aren’t the only reasons to go see Magic Mike XXL. After all, says film costar Andie MacDowell, the women of the cast hold their own just fine, too. “I don’t understand why men aren’t going to see it. I was extremely amorous after I saw this movie. Why wouldn’t this be a date movie?” MacDowell wondered in a Wednesday, July 8, HuffPost Live interview.

Once fans are at the theater, MacDowell, 57, asks that they enjoy the movie in good fun, and don’t worry about objectification. “The fact that Jada Pinkett Smith was cast in a role that was going to be a man is a game-changer. It empowers women, and that’s an element in this, but the main thing is that it’s a fun movie,” said MacDowell, who plays Manganiello’s uninhibited Southern belle love interest Nancy.

“It’s really a fun movie and you can’t make it too serious. It’s about dancing, and that’s one thing nobody is talking about. I love watching those guys dance. It’s so much fun! And the fact that they’re dancing for our pleasure is a great big extra piece of it,” reasoned MacDowell, who earned her part by getting into character with a glass of wine and a low-cut blouse during her Skype audition with the director.

What’s more, said MacDowell, she wants fans to head to theaters to see her show off her “crazy person” acting chops. “I took full advantage of being an actress who could play a crazy person. I’d love to be able to do all kinds of crazy characters,” she told HuffPost Live. “I love being able to supply the audience with something wholesome [on Hallmark Channel’s Cedar Cove] but have this other crazy, creative piece who wants to be challenged and surprise people.”
