A woman is suing EOS, the widely popular circular-shaped lip balm, alleging that the product left her with damaged skin; dry, bleeding lips; and in severe pain for several days.

Rachael Cronin filed the class-action lawsuit against the company on Tuesday, January 12. A handful of celebs — including Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears and Hilary Duff — are known to use the product.

The lawsuit argues that EOS, which stands for Evolution of Smoothness, is “anything but smooth,” and alleges Cronin suffered from rashes, bleeding, blistering, cracking and loss of pigmentation after using the product. Her reaction to the product was so bad, she claims, that she required medical attention.

Cronin says that within hours of applying the balm, her lips felt like “sandpaper,” and after she reapplied the product, her “lips did not become smooth, and began severely cracking on the edges, causing flaking and bleeding from the cracks.” The following day, the lawsuit claims, Cronin’s “lips and surrounding skin area had severe blistering and rashes, causing her to seek medical care.” Cronin claims the condition lasted for 10 days and that she was in “severe shock and panic.”

Her lawsuit also claims that after she shared photos on social media of her outbreak, she was contacted by numerous other “individuals who shared their experience and health problems” with her.

Despite the claims, EOS stands behind its products.

“Some of you may have seen reports of a lawsuit filed against our company. We wanted to be sure that you, our valued customers and fans, know that the health and well-being of our customers is our top priority,” the company posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday, January 13. “Our products are safe to use, are made with the highest-quality ingredients and they all meet or exceed all safety and quality standards set out by our industry. An independent laboratory puts each of our products through a battery of rigorous testing to ensure this is the case. For these reasons, we firmly believe this lawsuit is without merit, and we will continue to create new and exciting products that delight our customers. Thank you. EOS.”

Cronin is represented by attorney Mark Geragos, who has represented celebs including Mike Tyson and Chris Brown. The lawsuit is seeking damages and demands corrective advertising.
