Idris Elba took home the win for Best Supporting Male at the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday, February 27, and opened up to Us Weekly about the challenges of filming Beasts of No Nation.
“It was hard, I literally had a baby one month before I started filming, my first son,” Elba revealed to Us. “Then I went off and made that film. It was the toughest thing for me to do. My mind wasn’t in that space. So it became a challenge that I had to really embrace.”
Elba, 43, welcomed his son, Winston, to the world with then-girlfriend Naiyana Garth in April 2014, and the Luther actor was quick to brag about their cute little bundle of joy. (The pair began dating in the summer of 2013.)
“My son Winston Elba was born yesterday … Truly Amazing,” Elba revealed on Twitter at the time.
Elba and Garth have since split, a source recently confirmed to Us.
Also at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday were Brie Larson, transgender actress Mya Taylor and the cast of Spotlight, which won several major awards throughout the night.
