All’s fair in love and war? Universal Pictures released a brand-new trailer for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt‘s much-anticipated new film By the Sea on Friday, Oct. 30 — and to say there’s trouble in paradise would be an understatement.
The video, which comes three months after the first trailer’s release in August, paints a dark picture of a turbulent marriage — even darker and more turbulent than the romance at the heart of the couple’s previous film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. (And they shot at each other in that one!)
It begins quietly, with wordless shots of the Maleficent star, 40, and the Fury actor, 51, brooding separately on vacation in France. But things take a turn when Roland (Pitt) pushes a sobbing, blonde Vanessa (Jolie) into a wall.
From there, we see shots of the couple kicking and shoving each other, interspersed with other shots of them downing pills, hitting countertops, and breaking down in the shower. There’s also a hint of voyeurism — just in case the soul-crushing despair isn’t enough to pique your interest.
“I wanted to suggest and guide and give hints to the audience but not bore them or reveal all before the film itself. I like trailers that don’t explain the whole film,” Jolie, who also directed, said of the trailer in an email to Entertainment Weekly.
“It isn’t my intention to hide anything from the audience, but the film is a complicated adult drama where things are often not what they seem,” she added. “The voyeurism for example, most people will assume only that it is titillating. But it has deeper resonance to the story.”
