Angelina Jolie Says Her Marriage to Brad Pitt Is “Very, Very Stable” in Rare Joint Interview

Angelina Jolie Says Her Marriage to Brad Pitt Is "Very, Very Stable"
Angelina Jolie said that her marriage to Brad Pitt is "very, very stable."

Rumors, begone. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples, but the pair have one thing in common that goes without saying: an unwavering love and respect for one another.

In a rare joint interview set to air Monday, Nov. 2, the couple, who secretly tied the knot in France in August 2014, sat down with NBC’s Tom Brokaw on the Today show to open up about their life as a married couple.

Asked how he felt when Jolie, 40, had to undergo a surgery to remove her ovaries earlier this year, Pitt, 51, said he was behind the actress’ choice 100 percent.

“Whatever’s got to be done to keep the family together, and keep the family together as long as possible is gonna be done,” the Moneyball actor said. “This was her charge, no question. It’s a scary decision. There’s many things that can go wrong and go many different directions.”

Jolie opted to remove her ovaries two years after going public with her decision to get a preventive double mastectomy in 2013. But despite her own nervousness, she said she knew she could count on Pitt to keep her afloat.

“I knew through the surgeries that [Pitt] was on my side and that this wasn’t something where I was going to feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn’t going to let that happen,” she said.

The pair, who share six children together — Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 9, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7 — will next costar in the Jolie-directed film By the Sea. It will mark the couple’s second time collaborating on-screen — the first, of course, was 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the film that sparked rumors of an offscreen romance while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.

The movie chronicles an unhappy couple’s vacation in France, and features tense arguments, plenty of tears, and even physical altercations. But, according to Jolie, the couple’s offscreen marriage is a far cry from the over-the-top dramatics of their characters in By the Sea

“I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film,” she said. “It’s because we’re actually very, very stable and these aren’t our issues.”

Not that everything went off without a hitch. The Unbroken director previously revealed that working with Pitt on set could be tough at times.

“I’d be directing myself and him in a scene where we’re having a fight, and I’d be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you’re frustrated with each other — it was very heavy,” she told the Directors Guild of America in a recent interview. “We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don’t know where to stand or where to look.”

By the Sea will be released Nov. 13.
