His little girl is growing up! President Barack Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia, is headed to college next year — and he’s not ready! The Commander in Chief recalled an emotional moment he shared with his high school student during a speech at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Mich., on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
“Just yesterday, Malia started her first day of senior year. You know, I was sitting in her room because I was going to see her off on her first day of school,” Obama, 54, said.
He continued: “She puts her head on my shoulder and she says, ‘Daddy, you know, you realize this is probably going to be the last time that you ever send me off for my first day of school.'”
Obama pretended to wipe away tears at the podium, but admitted that he did have to hold back from crying while discussing the future with Malia, 17. (His and first lady Michelle Obama’s youngest daughter Sasha, 14, also attends Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.)
“I had to look away. I didn’t want to just be such a crybaby. It makes no sense,” he said. “Michelle and I are way too young to have daughters who are both almost in college now. So as a parent, I was a little freaked out.”
As previously reported, Malia is set to graduate from private Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., in 2016. She interned as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s CBS show Extant, followed by an internship on Lena Dunham’s HBO show, Girls, this summer. A source told Us that she’s currently interning at a fashion house.
