Does a watermelon a day keep the doctor away? A young boy in Melbourne, Australia, caused quite a stir online on Saturday, January 2, after he was caught on camera eating an entire watermelon — rind and all.
In the video, the boy, dubbed “#watermelonboy” on social media, chomps into the large fruit with zeal, eating right through the rind as though it were an apple.
His self-satisfied smile and focused determination made him an instant Internet sensation, with commenters on Twitter cheering him on as the Women’s Big Bash League cricket match proceeded on the field below.
The boy was later identified as the son of radio host Tony Schibeci, who documented the last stages of the watermelon noshing via his own Twitter account.

“It’s been a big night for @watermelonboyau #watermelonboy,” he captioned a final snapshot of the boy all tuckered out with his mostly eaten watermelon nearby. “Time for sleep @tensporttv @BBL.”
Though the rind of a watermelon is noticeably less juicy than the fruit's bright red flesh, it is, in fact, edible and chock full of nutrients.
Something about a young boy eating a watermelon bringing cricket fans and non-fans together gives me hope for 2016. #watermelonboy
