In the magazine’s cover story, the “All I Wanna Do” singer, 54, chats about her move to Music City USA from Los Angeles, where she lived for 20 years. “When I bought this property,” Crow told the magazine, “I thought it would be nice to have a space that has nothing to do with work — just a quiet and sacred space to gather.”

But things didn’t turn out exactly as she had envisioned. The charming barn on the property — which also includes her house and a church — eventually became a soundproofed recording studio. “It’s ideal because I’m a single mom,” says Crow, who has sons Wyatt, 9, and Levi, 6, adopted in 2007 and 2010 respectively. “I can go to work just down the driveway.”

The nine-time Grammy winner — whose 1996 hit “If It Makes You Happy” went platinum — recorded her debut country album, 2013’s Feels Like Home, and 2010’s 100 Miles From Memphis in her Nashville studio, where guitars line the walls. One instrument, lovingly dubbed the “moneymaker,” was used to write every hit of her career!

Country Living’s second annual music–centric issue hits newsstands Tuesday, May 17, and also features Carrie Underwood‘s favorite country furniture (rocking chairs and porch swings!), Trisha Yearwood‘s recipe for a prized apple pie and Kacey MusgravesAlice in Wonderland–inspired backyard birthday tea party.
