Pull out the sewing machine! Halloween is around the corner, but there’s still plenty of time to make the perfect DIY costume for your adorable trick-or-treater. Eva Amurri Martino — who pens the lifestyle site Happily Eva After — shared her favorite (and creative!) outfits to try this holiday season exclusively with Us Weekly.
Slipping into handmade threads is all too familiar for the Mother’s Day actress, who welcomed daughter Marlowe Mae in August 2014 with her husband, Kyle. Her famous mom, Susan Sarandon, often thought outside the box during the spooky time of year.
“Surprisingly, my mom made almost all of our costumes! She was so busy, I really don’t know how she had the time,” Martino tells Us. “I remember a Peter Pan theme one year that was particularly cute. I was Peter, of course, and my littlest brother was Hook, complete with a huge black curly wig.”

1. Cool Cat
“The vibe of this costume is a little bit kitty, and a little bit cool! The trick is all black with little pops of white. Make sure to roll the sleeves of the T-shirt, James Dean-style! Then a pair of kitty ears are a must.”
2. Strawberry
“I found an adorable dress with strawberries that Marlowe wore all summer, but you can also make your own with just a simple red dress and paper “seeds” taped on…Put all the hair in one high ponytail, and attach [a green] bow for a stem to your little delicious strawberry!”
3. Sailor
“Any top with horizontal stripes will work for this look! Just pair it with some neutral-colored pants, and make an anchor out of cardboard attached to a piece of rope for your child to drag around.”
4. Cowgirl/boy
“Anything plaid! You know the drill. Pair it with jeans, and add a little bandana tied around the neck. A stuffed animal of a dog, cat, or horse works great as a prop. Extra points for cowboy boots!”
5. Real Housewives of _____
“I feel like everybody gets gifted heinous clothes from time to time, especially for baby girls. Put it to good use! Put her in the most over-the-top outfit she owns, then pile on the jewelry! Use a little toy purse as an accessory and make an iPhone out of cardboard to put inside!”
