Dr. Oz Advises Rob Kardashian: Work on Your Self-Esteem

Doctor’s orders. Dr. Mehmet Oz stopped by Us Weekly‘s NYC headquarters on Wednesday, January 6, where he exclusively revealed his advice for Rob Kardashian after the reality star was recently hospitalized and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

“I feel badly that Rob Kardashian was rushed to the emergency room with complications from diabetes,” the medical professional, 55, tells Us. “It can be life threatening.… A lot of groups think, ‘Oh, it’s just a little bit of sugar in my blood.’ No, it’s not. It’s deadly. It’s like having broken pieces of glass shard inside your body, scraping up the delicate lining of the arteries. It’s devastating, catastrophic, if you don’t address it.”

The TV personality, who just launched his latest program, The Day Off Diet, details to Us that the root of Kardashian’s issue is far more psychological than health-related. “A few years ago, I did a show with Richard Simmons, another celebrity that I adore,” he says.

At the time, Simmons, now 67, had dropped a whopping 100 pounds, so Oz came up with an idea for a segment. “[I got] 100 people in my studio who have all lost 100 pounds, and [asked] them all how they did it,” he tells Us. “I was going to get all 100 answers, and I was going to have the perfect library of how you actually lose weight. Except, they didn’t have 100 different answers. They had one: self-esteem.”

He went on to explain how changing their perspective also changed their bodies. “They all realized that when they appreciated that they were worth it, losing the weight became easy. When your best friend is doing something to themselves that hurts them, you tell them. So, imagine that someone that you love dearly is putting in their mouth something that they shouldn’t put in their mouth, and that because of that they are becoming morbidly obese. What do you tell them? Whatever you tell that person, you tell yourself. And that’s my advice to Rob.”

Us Weekly exclusively revealed on Wednesday that the Kardashian family, including Kris Jenner, Kourtney, Kim and Khloé Kardashian, are planning to stage an intervention for the Arthur George sock designer, 28, who one insider says has gained 100 pounds in three years. “They’re concerned he’s not taking the situation seriously,” the source told Us.

Oz says one way the Kardashians can encourage Rob is by being upstanding role models themselves. “I think the best way to support someone who’s got a weight issue is to be a role model and say, ‘Listen, I’m going on a program to fix my body — you want to come along for the ride? Help me do it, and if you want, you can do it too,'” he tells Us. “That way you are leading by example — not finger pointing. Because we are all different and we all fixate on our flaws.”
