Family first. Sylvester Stallone got emotional upon winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Creed at the 73rd annual awards ceremony on Sunday, January 10 — and the legendary actor made sure to keep his family at the forefront of his thoughts.
Stallone, 69, expressed surprise about winning the award over other Hollywood heavy-hitters such as Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Michael Shannon (99 Homes) and Paul Dano (Love & Mercy).
“I didn’t expect it at all, and I don’t remember a standing ovation. Was there really? Are you kidding?” he told reporters backstage following his win. “I did not expect to win at all. I was promising myself that I would be very aware the whole time. It proves I am not aware and I got caught up in the emotion. Just the mere fact that these incredible people were applauding, it makes me realize that in life, it is really never over until it’s over.”
The Rocky Balboa actor brought as his dates a bevy of beautiful women — his wife of 19 years, Jennifer Flavin, and their three daughters, Sophia Rose, Sistine and Scarlet.
Stallone is also the father of late son Sage, who died of heart disease in 2012 at the age of 36.
When asked by reporters whether his mentor role in Creed, in which he reprises his role as Balboa, was inspired by his relationship with his real-life son, Stallone was reflective.
“That’s a very heavy question,” he said. “To be frank, any time you can vent emotions that are real, I think it’s very, very helpful. Most importantly I wanted to respect his memory, and I think we did.”
