Dan Haggerty, the actor best known as mountain man Grizzly Adams, died at a hospital in Burbank, California, Friday, January 15, after battling cancer for five months. He was 74.

The actor was diagnosed with cancer of the spine in August and died at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, his manager, Terry Bomar, told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I talked to him yesterday and told him we’re praying for him,” Bomar said. “I told him, ‘I love you, man.’ The last thing I heard him say was, ‘I love you.’"

Despite the fact that Haggerty underwent chemotherapy for his spinal tumor, doctors later found a spot on his lung, Bomar said.

Haggerty got his break on the big screen playing the titular role in the 1974 hit film Life and Times of Grizzly Adams. The movie was such a success that it spawned an NBC series that debuted in 1977 and lasted two seasons, which he also starred in.

The 6-foot-1 actor also reprised his role in another feature released in 1981 and a telefilm released in 1982.

Late last year, Haggerty’s daughter Megan tried to raise funds for her father via GiveForward, raising $10,500 toward a goal of $100,000.

In addition to Megan, Haggerty is survived by his children Dylan, Cody, Tracey and Tammy.
