Kelly Rutherford Shares Reflective Quote After Tough Year, Custody Battle: ‘Some Broken Things Stay Broken’

Kelly Rutherford

Kelly Rutherford is ready for a fresh start in 2016. After a tumultuous year marked by numerous setbacks in her custody battle with ex-husband Daniel Giersch, the Gossip Girl alum seems stronger, wiser and more grateful than ever for friends and family.

On Thursday, December 31, the mom of Hermes, 8, and Helena, 6, took to Instagram to share a reflective passage from author Jennifer Weiner. She posted the quote with a simple thought-bubble emoji.

"I've learned a lot this year . . . I learned that things don't always turn out the way you planned, or the way you think they should," the post read. "And I've learned that there are things that go wrong that don't always get fixed or get put back together the way they were before. I've learned that some broken things stay broken, and I've learned that you can get through bad times and keep looking for better ones, as long as you have people who love you."

Not long after, she shared another picture, this one of her with her brother. "Happy new year to the best brother. Thank you for always making me laugh and being the voice of reason," she wrote. "In a world where things don't always make sense you always have the right thing to say to get me thru. Much love and healing and blessings for 2016."

As previously reported, Rutherford has been embroiled in a bitter custody battle with her ex for several years now. (She filed for divorce in 2008, when she was pregnant with Helena.)

Most recently, in mid-December, a Monaco judge awarded Giersch full custody of their two kids and ruled that the children would no longer be allowed to visit the actress in the United States.
