Hitting the road! Following the success of Netflix’s Making a Murderer, Steven Avery’s lawyers, Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, have announced plans to go on tour to discuss the true-crime docuseries’ highly publicized case.
Strang and Buting will embark on a 26-city North American trek starting this spring, kicking off April 16 at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston and finishing August 21 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“Making A Murderer‘s Dean Strang & Jerry Buting: A Conversation On Justice Tour will involve the two attorneys in conversation about the Steven Avery case and its broader implications, as well as a discussion on the larger topic of the American criminal justice system,” the tour’s site says. “Each night will also feature a Q&A portion and the opportunity for the audience to address questions directly to Dean Strang and Jerry Buting.”
Strang and Buting amassed a cult following through their participation in Making a Murderer. On the show, they illustrate a theory that their client, Avery, was framed by local law enforcement in Manitowac County, Wisconsin, for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Strang and Buting have presented the idea that officials may have planted evidence in order to sentence Avery to life in jail.
As previously reported, Avery was convicted of a rape in 1985 for which he served 18 years in prison. In 2007, a few years after his exoneration and while he was in the process of suing Manitowac County for $36 million, he was convicted of Halbach’s 2005 murder.
