Taylor Swift Curse Has Baseball Fans in a Tizzy: Here’s Why

They knew she was trouble when she walked in! MLB fans are in a tizzy over a rumored “Taylor Swift curse” that seems to take effect after the pop superstar visits a team’s stadium on her star-studded 1989 tour.

“Don’t get us wrong, we all love Taylor Swift — and maybe it’s all just a big coincidence — but it seems like after she visits a major league baseball city, there seems to be a major losing streak,” Good Morning America‘s Jesse Palmer explained in a segment about the odd phenomenon on Monday, Oct. 5.

As ESPN first noted in a story on Oct. 1, the alleged curse has affected the Washington Nationals, the Houston Astros, and the San Diego Padres — all in the last three months.

The Nationals, in particular, fell into a downward spiral during the final weeks of the season, going 32-39 after Swift took the stage in the capitol in mid-July. And a few nights after her concert at Nationals Park, the lights went out not once, not twice, but three times — causing the team’s game against the Dodgers to be suspended after five innings.

The Astros, meanwhile, led the American League West by two games when the “Style” singer performed at Houston’s Minute Maid Park on Sept. 9. They lost seven of their next eight and finished the season in second place behind the Texas Rangers. The Padres, similarly, went 12-21 after Swift’s concert at Petco Park in San Diego on Aug. 29.

More recently, Swift performed in Toronto, Canada, on Oct. 2 and 3. That could be bad news for the American League East champion Blue Jays, who lost two in a row after she took the stage at the Rogers Centre on Friday night and are set to face off against the Rangers in the ALDS on Oct. 8.
