Joe Biden: ‘I Think I Would Have Been the Best President’

Talk about confidence! On the Wednesday, May 11, episode of Good Morning America, Vice President Joe Biden said that he would have been the leading candidate to take over the Oval Office if he had decided to join the 2016 presidential race.

“I planned on running. It’s an awful thing to say. I think I would have been the best president,” the politician, 73, told GMA’s Robin Roberts. “But it was the right thing, not just for my family, but for me.”

He continued, “No one should ever seek the presidency unless they’re able to devote their whole heart and soul and passion into just doing that.”

Biden pressed pause on his political aspirations after the May 2015 death of his beloved son Beau, who passed away at age 46 following a long battle with brain cancer.

“And, Beau was my soul. I just wasn’t ready to be able to do that,” Biden explained. “But, so, my one regret is my Beau’s not here. I don’t have any other regrets.”

Rather than campaigning to become the 45th POTUS, President Barack Obama’s VP is focusing on his Cancer MoonShot 2020 initiative, which aims to improve current cancer treatments and develop vaccine-based immunotherapy by the year 2020.

“This allows me to pour all my energies into — doing something that, hopefully will — five years from now if someone’s diagnosed with what my Beau was diagnosed with, they live,” he told Roberts, 55, a cancer survivor herself. “There’s so much promise out there,” adding that Beau was “the finest man I’ve ever known. He died like he lived, with great courage.”

During his chat with Roberts, Biden also shared his thoughts about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, the top contenders to become the country’s next commander in chief.

“I think he has been underestimated from the beginning but I also think its really, very, very early,” he said of Republican Trump, 69. “I think that what is gonna happen here is the constant attack coming from the Republican side … I don’t think that’s gonna wear well over the next couple months.”

Of his fellow Democrat, Clinton, 68, Biden declared: “I feel confident that Hillary will be the nominee and I feel confident she’ll be the next president.”
