Police Discuss Knife Allegedly Found Buried on O.J. Simpson’s Property — Is It Real or a Hoax?

The Los Angeles Police Department discussed the knife that was allegedly found buried on O.J. Simpson‘s property in a press conference on Friday, March 4, and confirmed that the item has been submitted to labs for formal testing.

“The person we received this knife from was a retired LAPD officer,” the spokesperson confirmed during the presser. “A construction worker provided him with the knife that was found on the property … We have now recovered it within the last month.”

The officer in question, whose identity remains concealed, is a retired traffic officer who supposedly received the item from a construction worker nearly 12 years ago. “My understanding is it’s a knife,” the officer said when asked if the object thad had been turned over was a machete or another weapon.

The LAPD added that the case of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman‘s murders from June 1994 is an ongoing investigation. “The bottom line is that with all cases that remain open … unless there’s an actual arrest or conviction to prove that we have actually closed the case, the cases remain open,” the officer announced on Friday. “And that is where we are with the O.J. Simpson case. And I shouldn’t say the O.J. Simpson case, this is the Nicole Brown Simpson double homicide.”

Regardless of what police discover, if anything, Simpson, 68, cannot be charged for the crime even if evidence is linked back to him in any way. “Double jeopardy would be in place here,” the officer said. “So we could not charge Mr. Simpson with the homicides, because he’s been acquitted.” The former athlete, however, is currently serving a 33-year sentence behind bars for armed robbery, kidnapping and several other felonies.

TMZ first reported the story of the knife on Friday, detailing how a construction worker allegedly found the buck knife many years ago, possibly in 1998. The item was reportedly found buried on the grounds of Simpson’s former mansion and handed over to a cop, who kept the item in his personal possession until 2016.

The case of Brown and Goldman’s murders is back in the headlines after the release of FX’s ongoing miniseries, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres this past week, Brown Simpson’s pal, Kris Jenner, recalled the sequence of events during that time.

“She and I were supposed to have lunch the day after she was murdered,” Jenner recalled. “She said she wanted to show me some things and talk about what was in her safe. So now, unfortunately, it all makes sense … That’s probably what she wanted to reveal to me that next day, which broke my heart, because I will always feel horrible that I didn’t pay enough attention.”
