Holy hoopla! Kim Kardashian announced on Monday, Dec. 7, that she and Kanye West have named their newborn baby son Saint West, and they’ve been using the moniker for quite some time, according to one source.
A source close to Kardashian, 35, told Us Weekly last month that the proud parents were already referring to their future son as “Saint” well before his delivery this past Saturday, Dec. 5, and their subsequent announcement. The insider told Us in November that the parents of two referred to the little baby as a “saint” because he was a miracle baby. As chronicled on the previous season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the reality star had a difficult time getting pregnant and explored a variety of options to conceive her second child.
“I had this condition called placenta accreta. There were a couple little operations to fix all that, so that created a little hole in my uterus, which I think made it really tough to get pregnant again,” Kardashian told C Magazine in her September 2015 cover story. “It was a long road. I would go to the doctor in Beverly Hills every day at five in the morning to get tested to see if I was ovulating . . . I was trying everything: I did acupuncture and got a nutritionist to eat healthier, thinking that was an issue.” Us Weekly broke the news that Kardashian and West were expecting their second child.
Saint also joins his older cousin, 11-month-old Reign Aston Disick, in the grandiose names department.
The word “saint” is also connected to West’s fashion background; the rapper previously studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design. In an interview this past February, West broke down while discussing Louise Wilson, a late fashion design professor at the institution, who profoundly impacted him.
“I think she knew she was gonna pass, and she just wanted to give me some words of advice to move forward. She was asking me about my daughter. She was asking me about my wife,” West recalled to BBC1 Radio’s Zane Lowe of Wilson. “I didn’t know we were gonna lose her.”
Saint is also among the couple’s favorite designer labels: Saint Laurent Paris. The couple and their 2-year-old daughter, North, are frequently photographed in Hedi Slimane‘s luxurious clothing pieces and accessories.
However, some things about “Saint” are firmly in the more distant past. For one, Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush played for the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2010, and won the Super Bowl with Drew Brees‘ team in his final season before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. Bush now plays for the San Francisco 49ers.
While Saint is an offbeat name, the moniker has already been used by at least one other Hollywood parent. Pete Wentz and his girlfriend, Meagn Camper, bestowed the name “Saint Lazslo Wentz” upon their baby boy in August 2014.
