Wishing he hadn’t said so much? Dustin Lance Black has responded to Sam Smith‘s apology over his Oscar acceptance speech snafu — and apparently his catty tweet was all a big joke!
The 41-year-old fiancé of British diving hero Tom Daley seemed to lash out at Smith after his Oscars 2016 excitement, not only lambasting the James Bond singer for his erroneous claims that he “might be” the first openly gay Oscar winner, but also ticking him off for texting Daley too often.
“Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here’s a start:” he wrote, linking to his acceptance speech from the 2009 Oscars when he won an Oscar for best original screenplay for his movie Milk.
Smith, 23, for his part, was full of apologies when he woke on Monday, February 29, to discover the Twitter storm that had erupted over his suggestion that he was the first openly gay Oscar winner (in fact there have been many before him, such as Elton John, Melissa Etheridge and, of course, Black).
“So hungover. genuinely feels like a dream,” Smith tweeted Monday morning. “Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point … My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly. … Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x.”
Black took to Twitter shortly afterward to hammer home his point. “THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us,” he continued.

But six hours later, he returned to the social media world, to try and take some heat out of the fire he’d created.
Well this has proven to be a lively day on Twitter. From humor to anger. The former my intent… in defense of history. Much love to all.

Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh.

And then, in case there were any misunderstandings remaining, he continued.
