Gwen Stefani ‘Was So Embarrassed’ During Gavin Rossdale Breakup: ‘It Was Rock Bottom’

This is indeed what the truth feels like. Gwen Stefani revealed to CBS Sunday Morning in an, interview airing March 20, that she was “so embarrassed” after splitting with her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale, following his affair with their former nanny Mindy Mann

Stefani, 46, has never directly spoken out about her ex’s cheating scandal with the nanny — which Us Weekly broke shortly after the couple announced their split in August 2015 — but she alluded to the devastating blow in her sit-down with CBS’ Lee Cowan.

“I had no skin, it was so raw, you know what I mean?” Stefani — who is currently promoting her new album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like — recalled of the fallout. “And nobody knew what was happening and I had this big secret.” As previously reported by Us, Stefani learned about her husband’s betrayal in February 2015 after discovering risqué texts between Rossdale and Mann.

“During that time period, I felt like, I was down all the way,” she continued. “Like you don’t go down lower than that. It was rock bottom. I was so embarrassed, you know what I mean? I was like, ‘Wow, I can’t. I have to turn this into something. I can’t go down like this. Like, if I can do music, then maybe just everything will be OK.'”

Stefani told Cowan that she was so thankful to have built a friendship with Blake Shelton during that devastating time. “In all this craziness that happened, like unexpected horribleness, I found a friend who was going through literally the exact same thing as me, and that is a miracle, you know,” Stefani said of her fellow Voice coach, who split from Miranda Lambert in July 2015. “And it just saved me so much, and I feel so grateful for that.”

The pop star, who’s continuing her press tour for her third solo studio album, told Time in an interview on Friday, March 18, why she’s been so unfiltered about the breakup. “I don’t feel like I have anything to be ashamed of,” she explained. “I’ve done nothing wrong. I don’t feel like I have anything to protect about myself. But when you’re a mother, you have to have some boundaries.”

Stefani and Rossdale share three sons — Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2.

Watch a preview of her sit-down above, and tune in to CBS Sunday Morning on Sunday, March 20, at 9 p.m. ET.
