Don’t be afraid to get dirty! Legendary film editor Anne Coates recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she thought the 2015 big-screen adaptation of E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey could have been, well, racier.
“I thought it could have been a little more raunchy myself,” the 90-year-old editor told THR just ahead of being honored with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Career Achievement Award on Saturday, January 9. “Creatively, it was quite interesting because they were trying to get as sexy as they could and get an R rating. So we were very delicately going around some of the scenes.”

Coates, who has also worked on such Hollywood classics as David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, David Lynch’s The Elephant Man and Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, added that she didn’t initially anticipate working on Fifty.
“I was surprised to be asked to do it, but I think it was because I did [Adrian Lyne’s] Unfaithful, which was fairly sexy,” she added.
Dakota Johnson, who starred as Anastasia Steele opposite Jamie Dornan in the panned film, recently told British Vogue in its February issue that she has no regrets about her role in the movie.

“I’m proud of Fifty Shades of Grey,” the 26-year-old actress said. “I don’t need to distance myself from that. The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do. Do I think it opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name.”
On Wednesday, January 6, Johnson took home the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress over fellow nominees Blake Lively (The Age of Adaline), Jennifer Lopez (The Boy Next Door), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs).
