Kanye West: I Was Wrong About Infamous Beck Rant at Grammys

Kanye West said he was wrong about Beck

Kanye West may have been four, five seconds from wildin’ when Beck won Best Album at February’s Grammy Awards, but the rapper has a much different view on the matter four months later.

West, 38, touched on the drama at the 57th Annual Grammys in a new interview with the Sunday Times, admitting he was wrong to judge Beck and say that the celebrated artist didn’t deserve the honor of Best Album. The “New Slaves” performer added at the time that Beck needed to “respect artistry” and hand the Grammy over to Beyonce for her revolutionary self-titled album.

“I’m fine to apologize for inaccuracies,” West told the newspaper. “You know, I send flowers for inaccuracies. I talked to Beck’s wife [Marissa Ribisi], and I think I had a point about Beyonce’s album, but I think I was inaccurate with the concept of a gentleman who plays 14 instruments not respecting artistry.”

A few weeks after his post-Grammys tirade against Beck, West took to Twitter to apologize for his words. “I would like to publicly apologize to Beck,” he wrote at the time. “I’m sorry Beck.”

While Kim Kardashian‘s husband changed his mind about Beck and his Morning Phase album, some things remained the same in his interview with the Sunday Times. The rapper, who is infamous for comparing himself to greats such as Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, and Walt Disney, continued his streak in the chat.

“Imagine if [Leonardo] da Vinci or Michelangelo or Galileo were asked not to think of anything except for the one thing they first became famous for,” West said when discussing his own constant reinvention. “So da Vinci could only have one idea.”

“For all haters, I’m not saying I’m da Vinci, but I feel it’s right for any human being to compare themselves to anything,” West added, preempting the backlash. “I could compare myself to this chair, I’m saying, ‘I’ve got all this on my back, so I’m a chair.’ People get really uptight about my comparisons, but I’m an extreme speaker, and I speak through comparisons.”
