He’s focused on his health. Nick Cannon opened up to HuffPost Live this week about living with lupus, an autoimmune disease that he was diagnosed with back in 2012.

Nearly four years ago, Cannon, 35, exclusively revealed to Us Weekly that he was grappling with the condition. At the time, the multihyphenate was on the mend after several medical setbacks, including kidney failure and blood clots in his lung. The dad of two described his health woes to Us as “an autoimmune disease … but no one else in my family has it.”

“It was superscary just because you don’t know … you’ve never heard of [lupus],” he told HuffPost on Wednesday, February 24. “I knew nothing about it until I was diagnosed…. But to me, I’m healthier now than I’ve ever been before.” Cannon explained that anyone who’s grappling with an autoimmune disease needs to figure out the “proper things to eat” and take “preventative measures” to stave off flare-ups.

“Especially if you’re dealing with someone who has it,” he told HuffPost of the disease. “When you hear the words ‘autoimmune disease’ or ‘lupus,’ it’s like, ‘Whoa, what is that?’ That’s how I felt, and that’s how my family and friends felt as well…. But you realize it’s something that you can live with and actually overcome with the proper research and with the proper support system.”
