From Cuba to Cannes. Kristen Stewart wowed on the red carpet at the premiere of her new film Cafe Society at the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, May 11.
Stewart’s sheer Chanel dress with a kaleidoscope-inspired skirt is fresh from the runway — her stylist Tara Swennen swept it up directly after Chanel’s Cuban catwalk last week. “I went down [to Havana] and was able to handpick it off the runway, which was very cool, and bring it straight to France,” Swennen, who also works with Caitriona Balfe and Emily Ratajkowski, tells Us Weekly exclusively.
Though it meant the ensembles had to be chosen last-minute, Swennen was sure she’d find the perfect frocks during the momentous occasion. “The idea was to find her looks in Cuba,” Swennen explained. “Obviously Karl [Lagerfeld, Chanel’s creative director,] had a new vision for [Chanel Cruise 2017 in] Cuba, and it was a historic show. It’s been fun to bring some elements of it to Cannes.”
The outfit itself is more than just a pretty dress — its retro silhouette is a reflection of Stewart’s film, Cafe Society, which is set in the 1930s. “For the premiere, it was an ode to Woody [Allen]’s vision in the movie. So we chose more of a tea-length dress. It was romantic and beautiful, but loaned to her aesthetic a little bit of edge, obviously, with the sheer top and darker color scheme,” the celebrity stylist tells Us, adding that each of Stewart’s Cannes looks are vastly different.
Up next? An unexpected, avant garde style for the premiere of Personal Shopper next week.
Stewart’s drastic hair makeover — from brown to platinum blonde on April 10 — has been a “tremendous” influence in her red carpet style. “I met her 11 years ago. When she was a teen she was blonde, and I literally have wanted her to do it ever since, so I’m thrilled [with the color],” Swennen says. “Anytime someone cuts or dyes their hair it can change the complete mood. I love that it is beautiful and sunny here and she has this new blonde hair and it’s edgy and cool.”
