Emma Stone Confirms She Passed on Ghostbusters Reboot, Finally Addresses That Andrew Garfield Bag

Emma Stone's interview with WSJ magazine
Emma Stone revealed to WSJ that she turned down a role in the new Ghostbusters reboot; plus, what was really up with that Andrew Garfield shopping bag?

Who ya gonna call? Not Emma Stone! The Aloha actress, 26, was apparently in high demand for the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters reboot directed by Paul Feig, but as she revealed to WSJ Magazine in a new interview, she passed on the opportunity for fear of getting tied down to another franchise.

"The script was really funny," Stone told WSJ of the Ghostbusters movie, which will feature Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig. "It just didn't feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment — it's a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water."

The Birdman star's last franchise, of course, was the Amazing Spider-Man series, which costarred her real-life on-again boyfriend Andrew Garfield in the title role. (Stone played his love interest, Gwen Stacy.)

The two have been dating for three years — with a brief split this past March — but they rarely, if ever, open up about the relationship in public.

"See, I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason — because it's all so speculative and baseless," Stone told WSJ. "Once you start responding — once you're like, 'No, that's not true' — then they're like, 'Well, if we push enough, we'll get a comment, so let's see what else we can make up.'"

She added: "I understand the interest in it completely, because I've had it, too. But it's so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don't talk about it."

Actions speak louder than words, anyway. Shortly after splitting from Garfield this spring, Stone was photographed in Beverly Hills carrying a shopping bag with her then-ex's name on it. The pictures sparked countless headlines and a flurry of speculation — just as Stone knew they would.

She could have "flipped the bag around to hide his name," WSJ notes, but she chose not to. "When I picked up the bag, I was like, 'This is kind of funny if there are any [paparazzi] out there,'" she confessed to the mag, adding that the constant attention brings out some "rebelliousness" in her.

Next up for the star is the movie Irrational Man with Joaquin Phoenix, followed by a modern musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. (Stone proved her vocal chops last fall, when she made her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.) The musical, La La Land, costars Ryan Gosling, her on-screen love interest in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad

"I'm interested in things that are really scary and ambitious lately," she told WSJ. "Obviously Birdman was like that. And then doing [Cabaret], I was like, 'This feels like it could totally go wrong every single day.' And something about that feels vital."
