YouTube Star Shane Dawson Comes Out as Bisexual: Watch Video

Telling his story. YouTube star Shane Dawson came out as bisexual this week, releasing an emotional video on his YouTube channel.

The comedian and Internet personality, 26, posted a video titled simply, “I’m Bisexual” to his channel on Tuesday, July 7. The revealing visuals stand in stark contrast to Shane Dawson TV’s many parodies, comedy posts, and spoofs, which earned Dawson more than 6 million subscribers.

“This is a really hard video for me to make and I’m really scared and I never thought I would be making this ever,” Dawson says to open the clip. “I woke up this morning and I just, I just had to. I didn’t want to turn on my camera and my lights, I didn’t want to do my hair, I just wanted to turn on my computer and talk to you guys ’cause that’s what I have done since 2008, when I started this channel. I just want to be honest.”

Dressed down in a long-sleeved T-shirt and with his hair messy, Dawson goes on to explain his inspiration for coming out, and his journey to self-identification. Speaking to the camera, he says he is releasing the video in the hopes of helping “a lot of people.”

“I always wished that I was gay, that I was just 100 percent gay, for so many reasons,” the performer continues. “Number one, that means I would know who I was. Number two, it would be a lot easier for me to be accepted by people because, you know, I wear wigs and dresses on the Internet and I’m feminine, and you know, all these things. It would be so much easier to be like, ‘Yeah, I know I’m gay.’ But, I’m not. I’m not completely gay and I can’t sit here and say that I am ’cause that’s not real. That’s not genuine. But I also can’t sit here and say that I’m straight. This is something that I’ve come to the conclusion through therapy and also just being honest with myself.”

“I am bisexual,” Dawson adds. “I have said it out loud once before, in therapy. I have never really talked about it until now, publicly. The reason I’m talking about it is because there’s a lot of coming out videos of people that are gay or lesbian, and they’re so confident and they’re like, you know, ‘I’ve known since I was 5,’ ‘I’ve always been gay’… I’m not that. I don’t know who I am 100 percent.”
