The 2016 Golden Globes were full of surprises. Although a few top contenders — ahem, Leonardo DiCaprio — took home awards as expected, there were a handful of talented actors who unexpectedly stole the show.
Rachel Bloom, for one, kicked off the evening, securing the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) for her role in CW newbie Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The actress was up against vets including Jamie Lee Curtis (Scream Queens), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) and last year’s winner, Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin).
Another surprising win went to Christian Slater for his performance in Mr. Robot. Slater beat out fellow Best Performance by an Actor In a Supporting Role nominees Alan Cumming, Damian Lewis, Ben Mendelsohn and Tobias Menzies.
Steve Jobs actress Kate Winslet, meanwhile, was visibly shocked when she was awarded the Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
And Lady Gaga’s win came as a complete surprise to some, given that American Horror Story: Hotel is her first major role. The singer won Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Gaga beat nominees Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Hay, Felicity Huffman and Queen Latifah.
Other surprising victories included Amazon Prime’s Mozart in the Jungle, which took home Best Television Series, and Wolf Hall‘s win for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Jennifer Lawrence’s win for Best Performance in Joy also surprised some, as did The Revenant‘s big win for Best Motion Picture Drama.
