Man Claims He Had Consensual Sex, Romance With a Dolphin — and There’s a Documentary About It, Too

File this under NSFW. Malcolm Brenner, the subject of award-winning short documentary Dolphin Lover, claims to have had consensual intercourse with a dolphin named Dolly back in the ’70s.

And on Wednesday, April 14, filmmakers Joey Daoud and Kareem Tabsch have released the controversial flick for free online in honor of National Dolphin Day.

“Since we made the film we’ve been getting countless requests asking us where to see it,” the directing duo told Us Weekly in a statement. “We thought there was no better way to share the film with the world than to release it on National Dolphin Day as a gift to Dolphin lover everywhere.”

The 17-minute film follows the story of Brenner, now 64, back when he was a 19-year-old college student who was photographing marine animals at Floridaland, a marine park on the Southwest coast of Florida, in 1971.

In a short preview clip of the film, present-day Brenner details his first encounter with Dolly, who the self-proclaimed zoophile says initiated the contact.

“I started rubbing her forehead — she seemed to enjoy that — so I started rubbing her back, working my way down towards her tail, and as I was rubbing her, moving my hand towards her tail, Dolly started slowly rolling around her long axis,” Brenner says on-camera before getting into more graphic detail about Dolly’s supposed sexual advances.

The film then details Brenner’s year-long romance and one-time sexual encounter with Dolly. Their relationship eventually came to an end when Brenner left the state for college and Dolly was moved to an aquarium in Mississippi, where Brenner says she died of a broken heart.

“It took me about five years to work myself out of an immediate sense of depression,” he told Jezebel in an interview last year. “It wasn’t only that Dolly was separated from me. She had developed a fondness for the male dolphin, too, the one in Florida that she had to avoid so that we could make love. She was separated from him, too. And the other dolphins in the new aquarium did not take up with her. They have their pecking order and that’s that.”

Brenner has since been married two times, and admits to having had just one other sexual experience with an animal — a dog.

“I’m attracted to animals that have a rather independent streak in them,” he told Jezebel. “Animals that think for themselves.”
